I just posted the following review on Apple's App Store of the WeMo app and how it interacts with the Belkin WeMo Switch. I'm sure everyone has noticed that Amazon clumps the reviews of ALL the WeMo Products into one giant review section. I am not sure this is best as it is possible that various WeMo products are performing at different levels. For example, I noticed that the WeMo light switch has a fair amount of negative reviews. Maybe that is because it is the most often bought item in the WeMo line. Maybe it is a less admirable product. In my case, I was interested in the WeMo WALL SWITCH. I found it fatiguing to weed through all the reviews finding the ones on that specific product. Anyway...here is my review of the WeMo App in conjunction with the WeMo WALL SWITCH.
First, my hardware and software for reference:
iPhone 6+ running iOS 8.1.3 (12B466)
WeMo Product: 4 WeMo Switches (Kind that plugs into wall outlet)
Version of WeMo Switch: VA01
Firmware running on WeMo Switches: WeMo_US_2.00.7166.PVT
App Version: 1.10.2 (20022)
Here’s the good news:
1. All 4 of my WeMo Switches nicely control the devices to which I have them connected. 3 lights and one TV.
2. I can successfully control all 4 WeMo Switches via my Home Network, via the Enterprise Network at work, and via 3G and 4G.
For those reasons the product and app earn 5 Stars.
I had to take away 1 star because of the bad news:
1. The app is not refined and often requires several attempts at various tasks in the setup before success is achieved. Luckily I am not a novice user of iOS technology and am comfortable with trial and error. When I set up several of my devices I was told the device was trying to connect to my network. Then it told me it failed and to try again or later. I kept trying and it kept saying it failed. So I stopped trying…only to realize that the Switch WAS connected to my network! The developers need to fix this inaccurate reporting as many folks would give up right there trying to set up the device.
2. I understand the need for firmware updates and am actually glad the company is showing attention to areas of improvement by the presence of firmware updates. My switches needed 2 firmware updates each. Again, that’s fine. My only complaint is after the first firmware update on each of my 4 Switches I received a celebration banner saying something to the effect that 'Your WeMo switch is now running the latest, greatest FW version. Hooray!’ Actually, that was not true at all. There was still one more firmware update and only because I noticed a red dot on the menu bar at the bottom of the app screen did I decide to check if there were more firmware updates. This needs fixing. Each Firmware update takes a while…5 minutes or so. That’s ok.
4. When I experimented and turned on some of my devices from work (Enterprise network) and some of my devices via 4G (parking lot at work) everything went fine. When I got home all the device were on. Great! However, I was unable to turn 3 of the 4 devices off (Home Network). Because of past experience with other buggy apps, I totally closed the WeMo app and reopened it (I didn’t just put it in the background in the recently used app bar). That fixed the problem and I was able to turn off all the devices. Obviously the user shouldn’t need to do this (reboot the app) and some users may not think to do it. This is another area for the developers to refine the app.
All in all, I really like this product. I have no qualms recommending it. But novice users would be encouraged to solicit the assistance of an experienced person during setup and remember...my review is with regard to the functionality of the WeMo Wall Switch. Perhaps it applies to the other products. Perhaps not.
Setting up the WeMo Switch was a breeze. I simply plugged it into a power outlet and followed the easy-to-follow setup instructions through the WeMo app. Within minutes, I had my smart plug connected to my home Wi-Fi network and was ready to go.
One of the standout features of the WeMo Switch is its compatibility with Alexa. I can now control my plugged-in devices with simple voice commands. It's incredibly convenient to turn on or off lights, fans, or any other device without getting up or using a separate remote.
The app also offers a user-friendly interface that allows me to schedule and customize the operation of my devices. I can set timers, create on/off schedules, and even control multiple WeMo Switches at once.
Another impressive aspect of the WeMo Switch is its compact design, which doesn't obstruct adjacent outlets. The slim profile allows me to use the other socket without any issues.
I appreciate the WeMo Switch's energy monitoring feature. It provides real-time information about power usage, allowing me to keep track of my energy consumption and make adjustments to save on electricity costs.
The WeMo Switch has been incredibly reliable and responsive. I haven't encountered any connectivity or performance issues since I started using it.
Overall, I highly recommend the WeMo Switch Smart Plug to anyone looking to enhance their home with smart technology. Its seamless integration with Alexa and user-friendly app make it an indispensable tool for home automation. Say goodbye to manually controlling your devices and let the WeMo Switch and Alexa handle it all for you!
After the factory reset, it worked fine. However, my biggest complaint, is the Wemo app's lack of having any form of account management. I'm currently nowhere near my parents house, and my phone died so I had to get a new one. With my new phone, when I installed the Wemo app, theres no way for me to recover my old list of devices. The only thing the app lets me do is add new devices connected to my local network. However since I'm nowhere near my Wemo switch, that is impossible, and so I'm once again without access to controlling my device. If they added the ability to recover our devices remotely, this review would instantly go back to a 4 star review. For a device that's intended purpose it to allow you to control it from anywhere in the world, not having a way of re-setting up access to it when remote is a huge flaw in their design.
TLDR: device works well enough, however the lack of ability to setup/add your WeMo switch on a new device unless you're physically at the device is a huge design flaw that keeps this device from being useful.
Top reviews from other countries
The Switch took a little longer as I had to plan a time I could turn the power off to my den. You will need to know how to proper wire a light switch though the instructions are fairly good that came with the switch. Since I had done the wifi connection with the plug, I had no issues connecting the Switch to my network. Recently, I just discovered the long press rule of the switch which I paired with my plug, so now the switch can turn on lights in my den or the lamp plugged into the WeMo plugged in the bedroom.
As other people have reported, the software is junk. It's too slow to do anything in (even navigating between screens), takes too long to refresh, looks terrible and just generally feels sloppy. However, if you're willing to tolerate it, it will get the job done.
The device can be controlled via IFTTT (If This Then Than) although it's only very basic. You can turn it off and on - that's it. Unfortunately you can't get at the timer function built into the device.
Discovery via Amazon Echo is also simple ("Alexa, discover my appliances"). It uses the name you assigned your switch in the WeMo app (so you can call the switch "Coffeemaker" and tell Alexa to "Turn on Coffeemaker"). Again, very primitive. You can't say things like, "Alexa, turn on my coffee maker in half an hour" or "at 7am".
The device remembers all its settings if it looses power.
I got this device with the hopes that I could turn my UV sterilizer (used to cure 3D prints) on and set auto-off timers hands-free via my Echo (e.g. "Alexa, Turn my UV sterilizer on for 3 hours"). It didn't quite live up to my expectations in this regard, although I was able to set a delayed timer in the WeMo app (to always turn off the appliance x minutes after turning on) and then tell Alexa to turn it on. So as long as I'm happy with pre-set 3 hour cycle, it works.
Belkin advertises IFTTT as a selling point for these devices but fails to mention the enormous transactional delay. You hit the Light Switch and IFTTT will indeed toggle your Switch... 15 minutes later. That's not very useful. Having one device control another is clearly a significant use case and yet it's an afterthought for Belkin.
Rather than returning the products, I changed my intended usage of the devices and toggle them from my Android tablet or phone, which is clearly Belkin's intended primary use case. I don't know who would prefer this over a p2p connection between devices but I guess you have to appreciate that's just what the devices are intended to do. If you're imagining any other use, give up for now.
Unfortunately, the WeMo products don't even do this very well. The Android app is sluggish and buggy. Want to turn on the lights? You wait 5 seconds while the app starts, 5 seconds while it polls your WiFi and 5 seconds while it refreshes the screen and makes the WeMo devices it finds available. I have a Nexus 7 and an HTC One so I'm inclined to believe it's the app and not my Android products.
Now you're ready to turn on your lights... But wait! Do you want to upgrade your firmware? How about now? How about now?
The app should prioritize operating the devices, not managing or upgrading them. As it stands, the WeMo products are vastly less convenient than even the worst-located hard-wired switch could possibly be. You could probably invent the light bulb before your WeMo product could turn it on. At least you can use your smartphone?
There's potential here but I think the WeMo devices are still only suitable for early adopters who're willing to put up with a lot of ****. Don't count on this product being reliable, fast or easy.
Added a star because as of June 26 2017, Google Home is available in Canada and it supports WEMO switches! The one wemo switch I have is on my bedroom fan and I've just ordered a second!
If all you need is control over one device this should do the trick.
