What to Look For

If installing a built-in dishwasher in your kitchen is an impossibility, have no fear. Portable dishwashers offer many of the features of their larger counterparts. Still, you'll need to choose the right kind.

All portable dishwashers use a kitchen faucet as a water supply and drain through a hose into the sink. That means you won't be able to use your kitchen sink while the dishes are washing, so you'll have to plan ahead. There are three major types of portable dishwashers.

18-inch Portable Dishwasher The smallest full-size dishwashers, these are ideal for smaller kitchens without a space for dedicated built-in units.

24-inch Portable Dishwasher Akin to a full-size dishwasher that wheels away when you're done, it's good for bigger kitchens in apartments where the landlord won't allow modifications.

Countertop Dishwasher These vary in size, but usually are larger than a microwave and can hold up to four place settings. Most offer sanitization functions and use very little water compared to handwashing.
