Global appliance magnate Electrolux brought the future of the kitchen to Milan's EuroCucina, and it looks awesome.
Unlike more futuristic design studies, Electrolux's concepts are almost ready for production. They're also obvious concepts that—based on the crowds they drew—will likely become popular on future products.
For instance, a new dishwasher rack promises to make loading and unloading dishes easier on your back. Instead of a traditional bottom rack that slides out onto the open door, forcing users to bend down to take out heavy pots and pans, the concept on display at EuroCucina has a bottom rack that swings up to waist level.
Electrolux is echoing the concept in a refrigerator, which has a bottom freezer compartment that swings up to give easier access to frozen goods in the lower drawer.
Culinary connoisseurs will love the beautiful herb garden from this kitchen of the future. Installed like a wall oven or undercounter refrigerator, it comes complete with humidity control and artificial sunlight bulbs. The concept is inspired by the idea of a chef's garden, where a cook will grow the items he or she uses in the kitchen.
Finally, we saw a gas cooktop with movable burners, which allows a cook to reconfigure flames to match different size pots and pans.
While all the products at EuroCucina were clearly concepts, it's feasible that nearly all of them could make it to production.
More important to U.S. readers, it's possible that some of these enviable innovations might even make it stateside. Electrolux, based in Sweden, is the parent company of numerous regional brands, including Frigidaire in the U.S. and AEG in Germany. Our future fingers are crossed.
