Losing weight is hard.

No matter what anyone tells you, counting calories is an arduous task, weighing out portions is downright depressing, and I'm pretty sure that being deprived of your favorite treats is a form of torture meted out somewhere in Dante's Inferno. While it won't entirely ease the pain of losing weight, the ETE plate does eliminate two of those Herculean tasks from your diet regime.

Created by Dutch designer Annet Bruil, the ETE is a remarkably simple yet highly effective way to keep food portions under control. What Bruil has done is silkscreen an easy-to-follow pie chart onto a standard dinner plate, separating the surface into sections based on food types.

The plate features areas for protein, vegetables, salad, and starch, as well as a mixed section for foods that combine two or more categories and a wedge designed to be left empty so you have room to move food around the plate.

The ETE plate not only helps you lose weight, but it also develops healthy eating habits.

The portion sizes and types are assigned based on Dutch nutritional guidelines, but Americans will be happy to know that they're more or less analogous to current U.S. dietary recommendations.

While the plate is perfect for those hoping to shed a few pounds, it's also a great teaching tool to educate children on healthy eating habits and portion control. And over time, using the plate will help you recognize and stick to sensible portion sizes, even when the ETE isn't around to help.

The response to the plate has been overwhelmingly positive, and as a result, demand has far outstripped supply. Bruil has run out of English-language plates, but says he plans to manufacture more soon. If you can read Dutch, though, you can get onboard right away.
