GE announced Monday it is launching a completely new suite of home appliances to be controlled via mobile apps. The GE Profile appliances—including ovens, fridges, dishwashers, and laundry—are designed to give consumers complete control through their smartphones or tablets.

The smart functionality of these appliances will allow consumers to interact with their homes remotely, performing actions like preheating the oven or checking the availability of ice in the freezer while browsing the grocery store. The software will also provide users with alerts when, for instance, a dishwasher cycle has finished, or when a fridge requires a new water filter. In fact, you can even set the app to automatically order new filters when needed.

Other functions include laundry alerts that can notify you when a shirt is about to wrinkle, or a vacation mode that you can set for your hot water heater to save money on your utility bill.

"Smartphones are the toolbox where consumers go to manage day-to-day tasks," said Liz VerSchure, general manager for GE’s connected appliances, in a statement. "At GE, we're using connected appliances to help homeowners maintain their products, save time and give peace of mind."

GE also provided information about the release dates of each type of smart appliance it has developed. The Profile wall ovens/ranges are currently available, while other app-controlled appliances will come out later this year. A GeoSpring™ water heater will be made available in February. French door bottom-freezer refrigerators will be available this April, with a laundry pair coming out in May. The GE app-controlled dishwasher won't be available for purchase until late 2015.
