There are a lot of retro-styled appliances on the market, but most of them are fridges and ovens. What’s a retro-themed renovator to do for a period-appropriate dishwasher?

We’re excited to see that Smeg is bringing its ’50s Retro Style Dishwasher (MSRP ~$1,500) to the U.S.

Up front, you’ll find a thick chrome handle and a curved, enameled front. Color choices haven’t been finalized, but we expect to at least see red, white, black, and cream in addition to some other bright hues and pastels.

Controls are hidden up top, and—at least on the prototype we saw at Design & Construction Week in Las Vegas—were as foreign to American eyes as other Italian-made dishwashers we’ve tested. Still, all the expected options are there, including Quick Wash, a Normal cycle, and Pots & Pans.

The soft-glide dish racks look like nothing else out there: All the movable parts are color-coded to the same bright hue as the door, and the cutlery basket appears to have teeth holding in forks and knives.

But everything else about the dishwasher is pretty straightforward. A four-blade wash arm spins above a filter, and everything else looks exactly the same as you’d expect. We expect efficiency to be a lot better than machines from 50 years ago, of course.

Exact pricing hasn’t been finalized, and we don’t have a definite date for when this dishwasher will go on sale, but Smeg representatives told us to expect the ‘50s Retro Style Dishwasher later in 2016.
